There and back again

Looks like I've been assigned guard duty on Mars. I hope something exciting happens. It sounds like a dull place. I wonder what a giant company like the Union Aerospace Corporation does on a planet unfettered from regulations. Probably just cheap labour. I hope it will be more interesting than guarding a bunch of immigrants.

The trip's uneventful, but that's space travel for you. Space is pretty empty; it'd surprise me if anything happens there. So anyway, after the whole buch of nothing we arrived but there's no time to look around, even if the view while landing was fantastic.

I've only just stepped of the jet and the Commander is already hassling me to hurry up. I'd better get to his office: once I finish reading this advertisement on the computer terminal. It seems I could volunteer my body for experimental research and earn extra credits. Sounds like a good deal. Also it says here that one of the scientists is missing. I'd better keep my eyes open.

I went to the Commander's office after checking in. There they give me a PDA for security clearances and communications. PDA my ass. It's like carrying War and Peace around. This thing is huge. I might accidentally leave it somewhere.

It seems my first job is to find the missing scientist anyway. He was last seen in the Delta Compund where they do all the most top secret research so he's probably ok. I imagine he's just wandered off and go lost. I doubt anything bad could have happened to him here on Mars. The Commander gives me a robot to guide me so I won't get lost going there. The robot has a heavy machine gun -- I can't imagine why. What need is there for such a thing in a research base? Come to think about it, all the soldiers here have machines guns and I haven't got any weapons. Perhaps I should have something, if only for the sake of appearances. Ah, they have televisions here. I think I'll just watch a bit of the news. Quiet, little robot! I'm watching tv. I'll follow you in a moment.
